There is more to cutlery than its shine. Let's look at how these pieces take shape, starting with the press cutting metal stock into blanks. Cross-rolling adjusts the blank's width and thickness, preparing the head of the piece for further shaping. Trimming removes excess material to define the outline. Pattern stamping presses the design details into the metal. For selected knife designs, heated blanks are formed under pressure. The sequence varies with the product. Finishing takes place in stages. Fixtures hold the pieces while the equipment polishes their flat surfaces. Forks and spoons also need work along their edges and curves. Operators position the pieces for each finishing operation, bringing attention to different parts of the surface. After polishing, the pieces pass through a cleaning line designed to remove polishing compound and surface residue. At the inspection table, operators look over the pieces individually.
